Journal
Notes from the workshop.
Thoughts on bespoke joinery — panelling, staircases, libraries and the craft behind them — from the bench in Poole.
What is architectural joinery — and how it differs from off-the-shelf carpentry
Architectural joinery is drawn for one house and made to become part of it. Here is what that means, and why it is a different thing from fitted furniture or a general carpenter.
How much does a bespoke staircase cost? An honest guide
There is no catalogue price for a staircase made for one house — but a handful of decisions shape the cost. Here is how we think it through, and roughly what to expect.
How bespoke panelling should meet a period wall
Panelling is architecture, not decoration — and in an older house, the join between new work and old is where it succeeds or fails.
Choosing the timber for a bespoke staircase
The species you choose sets a staircase's colour, grain, cost and how it ages. Here is how we think it through.
Designing a fitted library that belongs to the room
A good library looks as though the room were built around it. A few decisions make the difference between fitted furniture and fine joinery.
