Hotel joinery, made to belong to the building
Reception desks, bars, banquettes, staircases and spa joinery for hotels: drawn for the building, made in our Poole workshop and fitted by our own joiners around the hotel’s trading.
We make joinery for hotels: reception desks, bars, banquettes, staircases and spa joinery, drawn for the building, made in our Poole workshop and fitted by our own joiners around the hotel’s trading. At Chewton Glen we made The Kitchen’s joinery and the main reception desk; at The Lygon Arms, the spa’s reception desk and display cabinets.
A hotel’s joinery is what its guests touch and use: the desk they check in at, the bar they lean on, the booth they sit in, the stair they climb. It has to suit the building, whether that is a country house or a boutique hotel in town, take a full house every day and be fitted without closing the hotel.
Below are our commissions at Chewton Glen in the New Forest and at The Lygon Arms in the Cotswolds, and what each one shows about how hotel joinery is made.

Reception desks
For the main entrance hall of Chewton Glen, the five-star hotel on the edge of the New Forest, we made the reception desk where guests check in: dark mahogany in the Georgian manner, set out as an L with a return for two working positions, the guest side of its top inset with three leather writing panels. It was drawn, made and polished in our workshop and installed in 2019.
We make reception and concierge desks for hotels in timber, veneer or solid surface. See bespoke reception desks and the Chewton Glen reception desk.

Restaurants and bars
In 2017 Chewton Glen opened The Kitchen, a cookery school and restaurant in its own building in the grounds. We made The Kitchen’s fitted joinery: the bar with its fluted copper front on a lit plinth, the oak wine racks over the back bar, the runs of ribbed leather banquettes capped in solid oak, the oak-framed screens that divide the long room, and the serveries with their banks of oak pigeon-hole drawers.

Spa joinery
At The Lygon Arms, the 14th-century coaching inn in Broadway, in the same hotel group as Chewton Glen, we designed, built and installed the bespoke reception desk and display cabinets for the Lygon Spa.

Staircases
At Chewton Glen we have also made the oak ladder stairs up to the loft bedrooms of the treehouse suites.
We make staircases for hotels and other commercial buildings as well as for houses, drawn to the Building Regulations guidance for stairs in buildings other than homes. See bespoke staircases.
What we make for hotels
Hotel joineryWorking in a hotel that stays open
Most hotel joinery is fitted while the hotel is trading, or during a renovation or refurbishment with a main contractor on site. We work to the programme, alongside the architect, the contractor and the interior designer, and out of hours where the hotel has to keep trading.
Everything is made and finished in our workshop, so the time on site is spent fitting it. For the joinery of a hotel fit-out, renovation or refurbishment, send us the drawings or a few photos and we will come back with a guide price. See commercial & hospitality joinery; for clinics and salons, see clinic & salon joinery.
How a project runs
From drawings to the final fitCommon questions
Hotel joineryWhat hotel joinery have you made?
At Chewton Glen in the New Forest we made the fitted joinery of The Kitchen, its cookery school and restaurant (2017), the main reception desk (2019) and the oak ladder stairs to the treehouse suites. At The Lygon Arms in Broadway we made the reception desk and display cabinets for the Lygon Spa. We have also made a hotel reception desk with a seamless solid-surface top.
Can you work while the hotel stays open?
Yes. We plan the installation around the hotel’s trading and work out of hours where the hotel has to keep trading. The joinery is made and finished in our workshop, so the time on site is spent fitting it.
Do you work with the hotel’s designer and main contractor?
Yes. We work to the programme alongside the architect, the main contractor and the interior designer, to their drawings with our own workshop detailing, or we draw the joinery from a brief.
Can new joinery suit a period hotel?
Yes. The reception desk at Chewton Glen was made in the Georgian manner, in mahogany with inlaid stringing and brass ring pulls, to look as though it had always stood in the hall.
Do you make staircases for hotels?
Yes. We make staircases for hotels and other commercial buildings, drawn to the Building Regulations guidance for stairs in buildings other than homes. At Chewton Glen we made the oak ladder stairs to the loft bedrooms of the treehouse suites.
How do we start?
Send us your drawings, or a few photos of the space with rough sizes. We come back with a guide price, then visit to survey and talk it through before anything is drawn in detail.
